Money Monday: What these popular quotes really mean!
This week we are diving into popular finance quotes and what they really mean, while next week we will review why salary isn't everything.
Have you ever heard something that made you stop in your tracks? Whether it was a song lyric, movie line or a quote, it caught your attention and you’ll likely remember it for a long time. Our guy Dave has said some pretty “weird” things (example: gif above), but let’s take a deeper look at what these things actually mean.
“Act your wage.”
If you have ever read the Total Money Makeover book or listened to an episode of The Ramsey Show podcast, you’ve likely heard this at some point. It’s usually mentioned when someone is living outside of their means and Dave reminds them that the Joneses are broke, but they don’t have to be! Acting your wage means only buying and doing things you can actually afford.
“If you will live like no one else, later you can live like no one else.”
Everyone interprets things a bit differently, but I understand this as: If you live within your means and on a budget, you will be able to live without money stress and be outrageously generous in the future.
In the outrageous generosity chapter of Financial Peace University Dave talks about how a friend of his took his entire family on an international vacation and when they returned home the man was approached about donating money for bicycles to giveaway to children at Christmas time. His response was to buy as many bikes as he could and volunteer himself and his family hand them out to the children. The man said he and his family had more fun handing out the bikes than they did on their vacation. I don’t know about you, but being able to have that kind of generosity sounds like a lot of fun to me!
“Gazelle intensity.”
Dave coined this phrase after reading Proverbs 6:4–5, “Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids. Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, and like a bird from the hand of the fowler.” It refers to the speed and intensity you should have when paying off your debt. No one explains it better than the man himself, so click here to hear it straight from him. Warning- if you don’t want to get fired up about paying off your debt, don’t click here.
The main reasons people don't change their financial situation are simple- being inconsistent, becoming overwhelmed and giving up too soon.
